Geographically modeled consumer expenditure estimates

ESRIA5 · direct accessManage supplier listing

Geographically modeled consumer expenditure estimates: Esri builds spending potential by product/service down to small-geography levels by modeling BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey microdata (Diary Survey plus five-wave Interview Survey, combining two survey years to stabilize thin samples) and calibrating against BEA Personal Consumption Expenditures, then projecting five years forward using demographic change. Outputs are total expenditures, average spending per household, and a Spending Potential Index (100 = national average) by item across retail, food-away-from-home, alcohol, school supplies and similar categories

Type

Format
Tabular — item-by-geography expenditure tables and index layers delivered as licensed GIS data layers and subscription data within ArcGIS Business Analyst / ArcGIS Location Platform
Volume
Small by design: roughly a few hundred expenditure item categories x ~80,000+ block groups and other standard geographies x annual vintage, i.e. order 10^6-10^7 indexed values, delivered as annual releases (2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 methodology papers exist in this table's pool)
Users
N/A — the survey panel belongs to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, not to Esri; BLS CEX interviews roughly 12,000-13,000 consumer units annually across the Diary and Interview components, which is the true sample behind every Esri estimate
History
30 years
Update frequency
not stated
Growth
Active but steady-state — the product is refreshed annually with published methodology statements each year (2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 editions all exist), with periodic item-list updates and category realignments rather than expansion in scope
Launched
Esri has modeled consumer spending from CEX microdata for more than 30 years (the paper states this), placing the product's origin in the late 1980s-1990s; BLS CEX itself has run since 1980
