Satellite-measured above-ground crude storage inventory dataset

EARSC-PORTALManage supplier listing

Satellite-measured above-ground crude storage inventory dataset (TankWatch): volumetric capacity and fill level of floating-roof oil tanks derived from very-high-resolution optical and cloud-penetrating radar imagery. Capacity is computed by automatic planimetric measurement of distances between tank features; fill level is derived by Shadow Positioning Analysis of the floating lid, with human quality assurance on the machine output. Delivered as near-real-time, weekly, monthly and historical series for 69 key oil storage locations worldwide, with a bespoke option to task satellites against a client's own site list, within about 24 hours of image capture. Explicitly aimed at markets where operators have no reporting obligation and official statistics are disbelieved - China and the Middle East in particular - plus Asia, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean.

Type

Format
Tabular time-series plus geospatial layers, delivered as periodic reports and datasets through a cloud-based analytics and GIS platform
Volume
69 named key storage locations; at typical hub scale of tens to several hundred tanks each, order 5,000-20,000 individually measured tanks, multiplied by weekly passes over roughly a decade of operating history = order 10^6-10^7 dated fill measurements, plus the derived capacity attribute for every tank and the archive of imagery and radar passes behind them (substantially larger, and reusable as a labelled imagery corpus). Estimate from the stated 69-site coverage and weekly cadence; per-tank counts are not published.
Users
~20-80 institutional subscriber seats (inferred: a roughly 22-person, roughly $5m-revenue UK firm selling a premium, tailored subscription to commodity traders, analysts, insurers and governments - a deliberately small, high-value customer base rather than a broad user pool)
History
8 years
Update frequency

Growth
Active and diversifying - TankWatch launched in 2018 as part of a Series A-funded expansion into satellite intelligence, the standalone TankWatch Limited was subsequently acquired in, and the firm has since broadened into adjacent satellite-analytics products for insurance catastrophe response, flood warning, methane emissions monitoring and economic proxies. Headcount around 22 with roughly $5m revenue indicates a stable specialist rather than a scale-up; the oil-storage line is one product among several rather than the sole focus, which is a focus-risk if the firm pivots further.
Launched
2018 for the TankWatch product (announced in trade press that year as part of a Series A-driven expansion); the parent company was established in 2012 and the TankWatch Limited entity was acquired into it later.
